Armani productions before and after 2008 follow completely different coding logic. A tool that applies a single system to the entire Armani catalogue gets half the bottles systematically wrong. VIPER handles both eras precisely, automatically recognising which one each bottle belongs to.
Giorgio Armani fragrances: from Milanese elegance to collecting
Giorgio Armani founded his fashion house in 1975 and presented the first fragrance in 1982. From that moment Armani fragrances carved out a prominent place in international luxury perfumery, complementing the brand's aesthetic vision: rigour, elegance, absence of decorative excess.
For collectors, Armani fragrance history divides clearly into two periods with very different production characteristics. The first cycle, from 1982 to the changes of 2008, includes fragrances that are now hard to find in their first productions: Armani pour Homme (1984), Gio (1992), the first version of Acqua di Giò (1996). The second cycle, from the late 2000s onwards, includes titles that achieved global commercial success but which often already exist in different versions from one another.
Vintage Armani: what's worth knowing
- Armani pour Homme (1984) in its first production has far more powdery, woody olfactory characteristics than later versions — collectors of 1980s masculine fragrances seek it specifically in its oldest editions.
- Gio pour Femme (1992) is among the rarest Armani feminine fragrances on the secondary market: produced for a limited period, in its first editions with original packaging it reaches interesting valuations.
- Acqua di Giò pour Homme (1996) is one of the best-selling masculine fragrances in history, but early productions have a slightly different marine profile from current formulations.
- The 2008 coding system change produced a brief transitional period where bottles exist with characteristics of both eras — so-called "transition hybrids", very hard to date without the right tools.
- Armani Code (2004) in its first productions has slightly different packaging and olfactory profile from later versions.
- Armani Privé fragrances, produced in limited and often discontinued quantities, quickly reach valuations far above their list price once sold out.
The Armani vintage fragrance market is steadily growing, especially for fragrances from the first production cycle (1982–2008). Armani pour Homme, Gio and the first editions of Acqua di Giò with intact original packaging are the most sought-after pieces among European collectors of Italian fragrances.
"I had an Armani pour Homme that looked 1980s but every other tool gave a strange date. VIPER immediately recognised it belonged to the first coding system and gave me the correct dating."
